Which Face Masks Are Effective Against The Spread of COVID-19?

Your mask may protect them. Their mask may protect you!

Since the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 virus, face masks have become a vital item of our day to day life.

In order to reduce the spread of the virus, WHO (World Health Organisation) as well as various governments worldwide have recently implemented new regulations by which wearing a mask in indoor settings has now become mandatory. Although it is not obligatory to be worn outdoors, it increases the probability of protecting people around us, especially those who are more vulnerable and at a higher risk of severe illness.

What type of face masks are effective against the spread of COVID-19?

Type IIR (EN14683)

These are medical masks which are also known as surgical masks. They are made of up to 4 ply construction, with a minimum of 3 layered non-woven materials, including filtration layers embedded in the middle. They also include a splash resistant layer that protect against blood and other bodily fluids.

They are highly recommended as they reduce the respiratory droplets from the wearer to be spread to other and to the surrounding environment. These masks also prevent the transmission from others.

An interim guide recently published by the World Health Organisation just made us realise how extremely important it is to wear a mask, not just in indoor spaces but anywhere where it may be difficult to maintain social distancing.

Evidence has proven that most COVID-19 transmissions are occurring from symptomatic people coming in close contact with other people who are not wearing appropriate PPE.

Moreover, further to scientific and medical data collected, WHO discusses about the pre-symptomatic transmission, explaining about the risk of transmission from people who are infected and spreading the virus while not having yet developed any symptoms. This can be very dangerous and hence emphasises is put on the importance of wearing masks…

  • Avoid touching the mask while it is on the face.
